The role of journalism in conflict - online workshop, 12th May 2020

On the 12th May 2020, Forward Thinking hosted an online workshop between Professor John Brewer and a small group of Israeli journalists, to explore the role of journalism during and after conflict. Professor Brewer is Professor of Post Conflict Studies at the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s University Belfast. The workshop included an introduction to the conflict in Northern Ireland, and a discussion of the media and ’peace journalism’ in Northern Ireland today. The participants discussed the problems caused by persistent divisions even after a peace settlement, and how journalism can play both a negative and positive role in addressing these divisions. This workshop is part of a programme seeking to engage journalists with the experience of Northern Ireland during and after the Troubles, to explore the interplay between journalism, violence and conflict.
