Stratcom Summit 2024: Exploring AI’s impact on international cooperation and conflict, 13-14 December 2024

On 13-14 December 2024, Oliver and Jordan participated in the International Strategic Communication (Stratcom) Summit in Istanbul.

This year’s conference, themed ‘AI in Communication: Trends, Traps, and Transformation’, brought together officials, academics, and experts to examine the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in national and international strategic communication.

Oliver contributed to a panel discussion titled ‘AI in International Strategic Communication: Collaboration and Regulation’, where he highlighted the profound impact AI will have on our different societies, and argued that although there is a need for international cooperation to develop regulatory standards , these should respect our basic human rights and internationally accepted norms.

Jordan spoke on a panel titled ‘Ethics in AI-Enabled Communication: Navigating Transparency and Accountability’, addressing the ethical dilemmas posed by AI in warfare, particularly regarding transparency and accountability in decision-making processes.

During the summit, Oliver and Jordan met with prominent figures, including His Excellency Cevdet Yılmaz, Vice President of Türkiye, a long-time participant in the Helsinki Policy Forum, and H.E. Fahrettin Altun, Head of the Directorate of Communications.

They also engaged with Dr. Kılıç Buğra Kanat, Research Director at the Foundation for Political, Economic, and Social Research (SETA) in Washington, D.C.

The Stratcom Summit underscored the critical importance of ethical frameworks and international collaboration in navigating AI’s evolving impact on communication and conflict.
