The Role of Journalism in Conflict – Workshop with Peter Sheridan, 17th June 2020

On the 17th June 2020, Forward Thinking hosted an online workshop with Peter Sheridan and a small group of Israeli journalists to explore the role of journalism during and after conflict.  Peter Sheridan is the CEO of Cooperation Ireland and was previously the senior officer in charge of policing the Irish border for the PSNI.The workshop provided an insight into key phases leading up to and following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and a reflection on the status of the peace agreement today. Participants explored the role of identity in conflict, discussing the problem of competing national identities and the importance of mutual recognition between different groups for successful dialogue to take place. This meeting was part of a programme that seeks to engage journalists with the experience of Northern Ireland during and after the Troubles, to explore the interplay between journalism, violence, and conflict.
