The Nyon Process Manager holds meetings in Cairo, 9th – 14th February 2012

This set of meetings, with an array of figures currently active in the changing Egyptian context, allowed Julian Weinberg, the Nyon Process Manager, to build upon existing relationships and establish new links with influential political actors and groups. Over the course of the trip, he was able to engage with a range of stakeholders in the Egyptian political scene following the parliamentary elections, including the foreign relations team of the Freedom and Justice Party, representatives from the Salafist Al Nour and Al Asala parties, Presidential candidate Dr Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, activists from April 6th Movement and many secular politicians and activists. Prominent topics of discussion frequently raised in meetings throughout the trip were the relationship between the SCAF and Parliament, the diversity of political movements and the varying social and political tensions within Egypt.
