Political Dialogues Director in Tunisia for the first round of Presidential Elections - 14th-18th September 2019

Julian Weinberg visited Tunisia 14-18 September during the first round of the Presidential elections.  The visit was an opportunity to meet with political and civil society leaders and to discuss developments in the country.  The results of the first round, which saw two candidates viewed as relative newcomers to politics advance. 

With Parliamentary elections and the second round of the Presidential election in the coming weeks, Tunisia’s new political leaders will have a number of challenges to grapple with when they take office.  With Tunisians complaining of a weak currency, high inflation, consistently high levels of unemployment and limited job prospects for young people, and concern about the country’s levels of debt, addressing the economy was a key issue for many ahead of the elections.
