Forward Thinking host roundtable in Tunisia attended by senior politicians, 11 January 2014
Forward Thinking hosted a one-day roundtable in Tunisia, 11th January, exploring the questions: "What are the grounds for a political accommodation between religious and secular understandings of society and governance, and is it possible for these different worldviews to reach sufficient consensus to work for the common interests of the country?" The meeting brought together a diversity of politicians from across the political spectrum, with opening speeches delivered by Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi (President of Ennahda), Beji Caid Essebsi (President of Nidaa Tounes) and Imed Daimi (Secretary-General of CPR), followed by a deep discussion amongst all participants. The meeting was a unique opportunity for leading politicians to reflect on the Tunisian transition at this historic moment. There was a recognition that the country's diversity enriches Tunisian society and does not have to act as a source of division. Democracy based on consensus, it was said, allows ground for common existence between religious and secular world views. Hopes were also expressed that Tunisia could provide a model for the rest of the Arab region on dealing with the multiple challenges leaders and society face at a time of transition.
