"Challenges and opportunities in Tunisian local government", Julian Weinberg visits Tunisia 1st-4th October 2018

Julian Weinberg visited Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia, during first week of October for a roundtable meeting with newly elected municipality officials and civil society organisations.

The conversation focused on the challenges and opportunities for local government to deliver change to the citizens of the town. Many of the newly elected officials were young and have been elected for the first time.

It was felt that the municipality should increase transparency around its work so as to strengthen accountability locally.  It was recognised that the municipality should engage civil society in its activities too. With limited resources and experience, the municipality could benefit greatly from utilising the expertise and resourcefulness of civil society organisations.

While in Tunisia, Julian also met with political leaders and Parliamentarians in Tunis to discuss the political situation in the country.
